A JOURNEY OF ADVENTURE, DISCOVERY, AND LEGACY BUILDING IN PERU IN 2023

Peru 2023 Legacy Expedition

June 3-11, 2023 (TO BE CONFIRMED)

We have a future to craft together.

In June of 2023, Legado community members will have a chance to journey to the land of Peru’s Machigenga Communal Reserve to be part of our newest program working in partnership with the Indigenous peoples of the Asháninkas, Matsigenkas, Yine Yami, Quechua, and Kakinte, key stewards of Andes Amazon.

Join us on a journey of adventure and creation which combines working with the Indigenous communities that steward the Machigenga Communal Reserve to create their legacies for a Thriving Future alongside mountain hiking and exploration activities in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The capstone of our time together is helping support one of Legado’s Community Legacy Workshops. Our last workshop in Kenya in November 2021 brought together over 95 Samburu leaders with Legado’s team and champions from across the US. Together we created personal and community legacies centered around stronger livelihoods and healthy forests, equal access to education, gender equity in governance, and more— Thriving Futures™ for all. Our next program in Peru— with you— is destined to be as uniquely powerful and experience.

Journey Details

Our trip begins with a quick overnight in Lima before we fly the next morning to Cusco – the gateway to Peru’s mountains. After exploring Cusco we journey through Peru’s Sacred Valley and the Malaga Mountain Pass to arrive in the Quillabamba, the valley of the moon in Quechua.

Our time together is focused around the Machigenga Communal Reserve–the heart of the Vilcabamba Mountains and the Avireri-Vraem Biosphere Reserve, one of the newest UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. It is also the site of Legado’s newest partnership in Latin America where we are working with the Machiguenga Communal Reserve team, part of the National Protected Areas Service of Peru (SERNANP) and the ECA Maeni (the Indigenous co-management entity of the Machiguenga CR) to create Thriving Futures with the over 7,000 Indigenous peoples who call the reserve home.

Once we are in Quillabamba, you as a Legado “champion” will jump in and help support Legado’s signature Legacy Workshop with Indigenous community participants as they craft their Thriving Future.  Each champion contributes in different ways, from helping facilitate a women’s discussion about micro-business opportunities, to drawing flip charts in English and Spanish, to welcoming and thanking each participant every morning, and more. You are truly one of our team as we all work to create an inclusive, dynamic, fun, and fruitful Legacy program.

Our time in Peru also includes hiking and exploring around the Vilcabamba mountains and foothills. This region hosts 12 different ecosystems in three ecoregions: the Amazon rainforest at the foot of the Andes, Yungas on the steep mountain slopes with cloud forests, and the high-elevation region in the Andes mountain range. We will alternate time between communities and Quillabamba andl also spend time visiting artisanal chocolate farms and local handicraft cooperatives alongside our time in each community we visit. Our time together ends back in Cusco, when the option exists to extend your time with a two-day hike to Machu Picchu or a short flight to Lima and beyond.

(Please note, as this is our first Peru Legacy Expedition we are showcasing photos from programs in Mozambique and Kenya.)

We’ve been running our Legacy Expeditions since 2015— Join us!

Why Legacy?

The cumulative impact of individual actions sets the trajectory of the future. When people think of their lives as having a legacy, they are emboldened to conceive and drive their own vision for a thriving future.

Legado works to activate the power of legacy so that people and their natural environment can thrive together – now and into the future.

Our Peru 2023 Legacy Expedition offers an opportunity to join the Legado team and our community partners to mobilize legacies in Peru’s Machiguenga Communal Reserve

“My experience traveling to Mt. Namuli and working with Legado was exceptional. The participants in our 3-day workshop ranged from community members, to agricultural specialists, to Ministry Officials. This area of the planet is more beautiful than anywhere I’ve traveled and I’d be thrilled for another opportunity to walk under the open sky of Mozambique. Majka’s style of leadership includes self-discovery, autonomy, and movement. I came away from my trip to Mt Namuli a transformed person and more able to be in service of my own community.“ – Christine Bachman

Legado + You in 2023

WHAT ABOUT COVID?

Legado believes that it is possible to hold our 2023 Legacy Expedition in Peru and do it safely. Alongside of this we are always monitoring the situation in Peru and globally and it’s important to be realistic about the factors that can impact this future trip.

All participants have to have up to date vaccinations, boosters, and comply with COVID testing requirements of Peru and their home countries.

COVID-19 AND THE IMPACT ON YOUR CONTRIBUTION:

We cannot legally issue refunds for any donations already received. If a trip is cancelled then any donations already received associated with the Legacy Expedition will be credited towards a future Legacy Expedition.
