You’re a Vincent Bush Squirrel!

(Paraxerus vincenti)

You and your fellow Vincent Bush Squirrels are wet, montane-forest species isolated to the highly threatened forests of Mt. Namuli. Your species’ range is very small and there is no information indicating that you are capable of surviving in modified habitats.

According to local hunters, too many of your ancestors have been trapped and eaten over time. Today, your species’ population size is unknown and you are rarely seen by people. But we know that you’re out there. Strong evidence of mammal species like you and others previously present on the Namuli Massif has been demonstrated through the sharing of hunters’ stories, the presence of animal skins, and imagery on stamps like the one above.

You are in danger

As a result of heavy hunting pressures, the endemic to Mount Namuli, you and your fellow Vincent Bush Squirrels exists largely in people’s memories (and on one of Mozambique’s stamps). You are extremely special as just one of two-known endemic mammals on the Sky Islands. You have been classified as Critically Endangered.
With accelerating deforestation and increasing critical forest habitat destruction from an increasing population of farmers practicing slash-and-burn agriculture, the unique species of Mount Namuli like you and your fellow Vincent Bush Squirrels are in critical danger of extinction.

This is where Legado steps in

By working with farmers towards effective community-based natural resource management, we are laying the path for empowered decision making, land use planning and a conservation agreement that protects high-altitude and riparian forest habitats, and the species that reside within them.

Through environmental education and local environmental leadership, we are building pride and a true understanding of the value of a standing forest and a healthy ecosystems’ implications for thriving futures on the mountain.

With conservation agriculture techniques, farmers are learning to conserve seeds and restore soil fertility so they may cultivate on the same area of land for longer, reducing their impact on the critical and unique forest habitats of Mount Namuli.
