A Journey of Adventure, Discovery, and Legacy Building in Peru in 2025

Featuring 360° Community-Led Change and a Visit to Machu Picchu

June 10-20, 2025

We Have a Future To Craft Together

In 2025, Legado community members will have a chance to journey to the land of Peru’s Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary to be part of our newest program working in partnership with the Indigenous peoples of the Asháninkas, Matsigenkas, Yine Yami, Quechua, and Kakinte, key stewards of Andes Amazon.

Join us on a journey of adventure and creation. The trip combines working with the Indigenous communities who steward the Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary to create their legacies alongside mountain hiking and exploration in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The capstone of our time together is helping support one of Legado’s Community Legacy Workshops. Together we will create personal and community legacies centered around stronger livelihoods and healthy forests, equal access to education, gender equity in governance, and more—which leads to Thriving Futures for all. We will celebrate our time together by exploring Machu Picchu as our final event.

Journey Details

Our trip begins with a quick overnight in Lima before we fly the next morning to Cusco—the gateway to Peru’s mountains. After exploring Cusco, we journey through Peru’s Sacred Valley and the Malaga Mountain Pass to arrive in the Quillabamba, the valley of the moon in Quechua.

Our time together is focused around the landscape housing the Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary—the heart of the Vilcabamba Mountains and the Avireri-Vraem Biosphere Reserve, one of the newest UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. It is also the site of Legado’s newest partnership where we are working with Peru’s National Service of Natural Protected Areas Megantoni National Sanctuary and Machiguenga Communal Reserve teams, along with the ECA Maeni (the Indigenous co-management entity of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve) to create Thriving Futures with the over 12,000 Indigenous peoples who call the reserve home.

Our Peru team is 100% female-led | Legado
Once we are in Quillabamba, you as a Legado “champion” will jump in and help support Legado’s signature Legacy Workshop with Indigenous community participants as they craft their Thriving Future. Each champion contributes in different ways, from helping facilitate a women’s discussion about micro-business opportunities, to drawing flip charts in English and Spanish, to welcoming and thanking each participant every morning, and more. You are truly one of our team as we all work to create an inclusive, dynamic, fun, and fruitful Legacy program.

Our time in Peru also includes hiking and exploring around the Vilcabamba mountains and foothills. This region hosts 12 different ecosystems in three ecoregions: the Amazon rainforest at the foot of the Andes, Yungas on the steep, cloud-forested mountain slopes, and the high-elevation region in the Andes mountain range. Between our time with local communities and in Quillabamba, we will also spend time visiting artisanal chocolate farms and local handicraft cooperatives. Our time together culminates with a visit to Machu Picchu, which we access via gentle walk from the hydroelectric station as our luggage arrives by train. We have a day to explore Machu Picchu before we return to Cusco, Lima, and beyond.

Why Legacy?

The cumulative impact of individual actions sets the trajectory of the future. When people think of their lives as having a legacy, they are emboldened to conceive and drive their own vision for a Thriving Future.

Legado works to activate the power of legacy so that people and their natural environment can thrive together—now and into the future.

Our Peru 2025 Legacy Expedition offers an opportunity to join the Legado team and our community partners to mobilize legacies in Peru’s Machiguenga Communal Reserve.

“My experience traveling to Mount Namuli and working with Legado was exceptional. The participants in our three-day workshop ranged from community members, to agricultural specialists, to Ministry Officials. This area of the planet is more beautiful than anywhere I’ve traveled, and I’d be thrilled for another opportunity to walk under the open sky of Mozambique. Majka’s style of leadership includes self-discovery, autonomy, and movement. I came away from my trip to Mount Namuli a transformed person and more able to be in service of my own community.“
